UPI is a real-time payments system that allows you to transfer money from one bank to another without divulging your account details. It is one the most popular and convenient digital payment methods in India. Over 3.5 billion transactions worth 6.4 lakhs crores were made in January 2021.
However, on Tuesday evening, UPI users across the country faced problems in making payments as several banks’ servers were down due to internal technical issues. The outage impacted various banking services as well as UPI-enabled apps such Google Pay, PhonePe BHIM, and Paytm.
Some users complained on social media that they could not transfer funds or complete transactions. Some of the most common complaints included “UPI payment failed”, “UPI server down”, “UPI not working”, “UPI error”, “UPI unavailable”.
“I have been trying to pay my electricity bill for the last two hours using UPI, but it is not working. This is very annoying and inconvenient. Please fix this issue as soon as possible.”

NPCI, National Payments Corporation of India (the organization that operates UPI), said its system was working fine and they were working with banks to resolve the matter. NPCI is a umbrella organization that operates retail payment and settlement systems across the country under the supervision of Reserve Bank of India.
“Regret inconvenience on UPI connectivity as few of the banks are having some internal technical issues. NPCI systems are working fine and we are working with these banks to ensure quick resolution.”

HDFC BankOne of the largest banks of the country said that UPI was part of an ecosystem, and they had some issues with it. They were back in operation later. HDFC Bank was under scrutiny by the RBI in the past for its frequent technological glitches.
“We experienced some difficulties on UPI which was part of a larger ecosystem. We are back in operations now. We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers.”

Neither banks nor NPCI has officially acknowledged the UPI outageThe cause of the outage or the timeframe for resolution was not disclosed. The UPI outage brought to light the importance for a robust digital infrastructure, and rapid resolution mechanisms in order to avoid disruptions of essential financial services. UPI is expected to play a key role in the government’s vision of a cashless and digital economy.
